Artist Biography

Karen Smithee is originally from Redwood City, California. She has been creative her entire life. As an older adult, she decided to return to college to inspire her creative journey and while earning an art teaching credential. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in Studio Art from California State University, Stanislaus. She was honored with the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad, in 2021.

Smithee has been included in various important exhibitions including Penumbra, Stanislaus State Literary and Art Journal, Turlock CA; “Nature” Art Exhibition, Light Space & Time, Online Art Gallery, Palm Springs, CA; 10th Annual “All Women” 2021 Art Exhibition, Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery, Palm Springs, CA; Celebration of the Humanities, Modesto Junior College, CA; and Autumn Art, Festival, Mistlin Gallery, Modesto CA.

She has received several SERSCA Program Grants from California State University, Stanislaus, in which she created large artworks for donation and permanent installation at the Modesto Gospel Mission Homeless Shelter, located in Modesto, California. Smithee currently lives and works in Hollister, California.
